Carnival book now available in print!

I am thrilled to say that my latest book New Orleans Carnival Krewes: The History, Spirit and Secrets of Mardi Gras  is now available to the public. It required several years of full-time  research during which I looked at the secret workings of the oldest and most exclusive Carnival Clubs, a story you don’t read about in the list of events in the Carnival calendar. This book presents the backbone of my study: the history and culture. Balls and parades and their spin offs are the lifeblood of New Orleans celebratory culture where one festival follows another until the triumphant day of Mardi Gras.

TodayThe carnival tradition started by the old-line balls has gotten bigger and better. Yes, you can discount Mardi Gras and leave town, but the spirit is there, the spirit in the people who after the most devastating hurricane in history, continued to parade; the spirit in the football players, the Saints, who won the Superbowl; the spirit in the young people who came to rescue the city and rescued themselves. The spirit caught by the rest of us who leave the City that Care Forgot, humming, “Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?”
